CPC Certification Timeline

How Long Does It Take to Get CPC Certified?

There is no single timeline that fits every CPC student. How quickly you can prepare depends on your healthcare background, training format, weekly study time, coding practice, and readiness for the certification exam. It is also important to distinguish passing the CPC exam from completing the experience requirement for full CPC status.

The short answer

Your CPC timeline has two different milestones

First, you need enough education and practice to be ready for the CPC exam. Second, after passing, new coders who have not yet met AAPC's experience requirement generally hold the CPC-A apprentice designation while completing the requirements for full CPC status.

Milestone 2: Full CPC status

Experience dependent

AAPC uses a two-year coding-experience standard for removal of the apprentice designation, with approved pathways that can combine work experience, qualifying coding education, and Practicode.

A realistic roadmap

What happens along the way?

1

Learn the coding foundation

Beginners need medical terminology, anatomy and pathophysiology knowledge along with ICD-10-CM, CPT®, HCPCS Level II, coding guidelines, modifiers, documentation concepts, and code-book navigation. The amount of time this takes depends heavily on your starting point and training schedule.

2

Practice before scheduling the exam

Finishing coursework does not automatically mean you should test the next day. Allow time for coding practice, review of weaker subjects, code-book navigation, and timed exam-style questions. Your goal should be readiness, not simply the fastest possible exam date.

3

Take the CPC exam

AAPC's current CPC exam has 100 multiple-choice questions, a four-hour time limit, and a 70% passing requirement. Scheduling availability and your chosen testing method can affect the calendar timeline.

4

Begin with CPC-A if you still need experience

If you pass without two years of coding experience, AAPC generally awards CPC-A status. The “A” identifies apprentice standing while you build the experience needed for full CPC status.

5

Complete the apprentice-removal requirements

AAPC currently recognizes several routes. Two years of qualifying on-the-job coding experience can meet the requirement. A qualifying 80-hour coding course may count toward one year when combined with one year of work experience, and AAPC also recognizes Practicode in approved combinations. Always verify the current documentation rules with AAPC when you are ready to apply.

Important distinction

Passing the CPC exam and removing the “A” are not the same timeline

A beginner can complete training and pass the CPC exam before having two years of professional coding experience. In that situation, AAPC uses the CPC-A apprentice designation. The apprentice designation is removed after the applicable experience requirements are completed and verified.

So when someone asks, “How long does it take to become CPC certified?” it helps to ask whether they mean how long until they can prepare for and pass the exam or how long until they hold the full CPC without the apprentice designation.

Frequently asked questions

CPC Timeline FAQ

Can I prepare for the CPC exam in three weeks?

MediCode Bootcamp offers an intensive three-week live program, but students should expect significant independent reading and coding practice in addition to the live sessions. Whether an accelerated format is appropriate depends on your background, available study time, and learning style.

Does passing the CPC exam immediately make me a full CPC?

If you pass without meeting AAPC's two-year experience requirement, you generally receive the CPC-A apprentice designation while completing the applicable experience requirements.

Can coding education count toward CPC-A removal?

AAPC currently allows approved combinations of coding education, work experience, and Practicode. A minimum 80 hours of qualifying coding education can satisfy one year of the experience requirement when paired with the required qualifying experience or another approved pathway.

Should I choose accelerated or self-paced CPC training?

Choose based on how you learn and the time you can realistically commit. Live accelerated training provides a set schedule and real-time instruction. Self-paced training gives you more flexibility and a longer study window.
